LOUISIANA Amateur Softball Association Coach Pitch Rules

The ASA (Amateur Softball Association) rules shall be used with the following changes and modifications.

AGE QUALIFICATIONS:  

All players must be EIGHT (8) years or younger.   Eligibility is determined by player's age prior to January 1 of current year.

PLAYING FIELD

 

Baseline distances will be sixty (60) feet. Pitching distances will be thirty-five (35) feet.
MASK Catchers MUST wear a catcher's helmet and catcher's mask.

UNIFORMS

 

As per the ASA Rule Book.
HELMETS All offensive players (to include the on deck batter) MUST properly wear a batting helmet with double ear flaps (any kind or color ... NOSCAE approved). Junior Olympic players acting as coaches MUST wear a batting helmet. All helmets MUST be approved by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOSCAE).
BALLS/BATS

White 11" Red String ASA approved Core .44 Softball

will be used. An official ASA approved softball bat will be used.

PLAYERS AND SUBSTITUTES

All players present and in uniform MUST PLAY TWO (2) CONSECUTIVE INNINGS ON DEFENSE. Failure to do so will result in a FORFEIT if protested by the opposing team. A team must have TEN (10) players present at game time to start the game. The short-handedd rule will apply if only 9 players are present.

There will be TEN (10) players on defense. SIX (6) players in the infield and FOUR (4) players in the outfield. Infielders, with the exception of the pitcher and catcher, are to be behind the baseline and outfielders to be beyond the infield line

 

The ball will not be allowed to become alive until the defensive players conform to this rule. Once the ball is pitched then all players can move accordingly.

In the event a player leaves the game due to an injury, the batter will be skipped every time that person comes up to bat. Defensively a substitution will be made. If all substitutes have been used, the last player substituted will play defense for the injured player. If team is playing with only 10 players, then the short-handed rule will applly.

If the player leaves the game volunntarily or is ejected, then an out will be registered every time that person comes up to bat. If all substitutes have been used, no substitute will replace this player on defense; the short-handed rule will apply

THE GAME A regulation game shall consist of SSEVEN (7) INNINGS, with a 10-run rule after FIVE (5) INNINGS. Each inning will end when the offensive team accumulates THREE (3) OUTS or after FIVE (5) RUNS have been scored, with the EXCEPTION of the SEVENTH INNING. There will be NO MAXIMUM LIMIT of runs in the SEVENTH INNING; THREE OUTS must be accumulated to end the seventh inning. A one-hour time limit will be in effect.
PITCHING

The team's manager or designated assistant will pitch to his/her team and will deliver the ball with an underhanded motion. The pitch must be delivered with perceptible arc and released at a moderate speed ..SLOW-PITCH. The umpire shall warn a pitcher who deliivers with excessive speed. If the pitcher repeats such an act after being warned, he shall be removed from the pitcher's position for the remainder of the game.

Two pitching rubbers will be utilized-one for the pitching coach and one for the player/pitcher. The pitching coach and the player/pitcher MUST keep his/her foot in contact with the pitching rubber until the ball is released. Failure to do so will result in a team warning, the second offense will mean the removal of the pitching coach from pitching for the remainder of the game. There will be no pitcher's circle or hash marks. Player/pitcher stands to the right of the pitching coach on the designated player pitching rubber.

The pitching coach MUST make an effort to remove himself or herself from all plays and not interfere with the flight of the ball or obstruct any defensive player from making a play. Once he removes himself from the mound, be should not be running alongside or coaching runners; the designated first and third base coaches will coach runners. The coach that is pitching cannot coach batters or base runners, while on the playing field. Penalty will be warning first and upon second infraction, coach will be ejected from the game.

If the pitching coach is hit by the ball or he/she interferes unintentionally, the ball is dead with no penalty to the batter or runners, and a no pitch ruled. If in the umpire's judgment the pitching coach interferes intentionally, the ball will be declared dead and the batter declared out.

NOTE: If intentional interference iis ruled by the umpire, the pitching coach will be issued a warning, and thereafter, any intentional interference will result in an automatic ejection of the pitching coach from the ballgame.

PITCHING POSITION: A chalk line will be be drawn extending to the left and right of the actual pitching rubber. The adult pitch will stand on the rubber will the player/pitcher will stand on the chalk line to either side of the adult

 

BATTING ORDER

 

Each team will bat its line-up in order throughout the entire game. The line-up will consist of all the players present and in uniform. ALL PLAYERS MUST PLAY.

 

HITTING

 

Each batter will receive FIVE (5) pitches. There will be no STRIKE OUTS and NO WALKS. If the batter fails to put the ball into play after FIVE (5) pitches, then the batter will be declared out.

Bunts and deliberate half swings are illegal and count as a pitch missed.

Throwing the bat is NOT ALLOWED. First offense will result in a team warning. Second offense will cause the batter to be declared out.

BASE RUNNING

Runners MUST stay in contact with the base until the ball is hit. The penalty for violation of this rule will result in the runner being declared out, the ball declared dead, and a no pitch ruled.

Runners advance at the risk of being put out at all times while the ball is alive.

NO BASE STEALING will be allowed

SUSPENSION OF PLAY

An umpire may suspend play when in his/her judgment the conditions justify such action. Umpires will not suspend play at the request of players, coaches, or managers until all action in progress by either team has been completed or in the umpire's judgment all immediate play is apparently completed. Then the umpire will call "time".

Each team is allowed one offensive time out per inning and three defensive time outs per game (As per ASA Rule Book).

INFIELD FLY RULE The INFIELD FLY RULE WILL NOT BE USED

SPORTSMANSHIP

 

Acts of poor sportsmanship and misconduct on the part of the players and coaches will not be tolerated. They will be ejected from the ballgame and MUST leave the ballpark immediately, or a forfeit will be declared.

Parents and fans of each team which continue to heckle or use abusive language toward umpires, game officials, or the opposing players will cause the coach of the team at fault to be warned so that he/she can adequately warn the parents or fans. If the problem occurs a second time, then the coach will be required to remove the parents or fans from the park or a forfeit will be declared.
